Coconut, Peanut Butter, Chocolate

Happy Monday! I'm enjoying this beautiful day and reflecting on a fun weekend. A birthday weekend. My husbands birthday was yesterday. On Friday we took M to the Long Beach Aquarium and had so much fun watching her get so excited about the fish. I love seeing things through a child's eyes. They just soak everything in and are so joyful! Saturday B went to a friend's bachelor party, at the beach, and was able to get lots of surfing in. While he was enjoying the beach, M and I celebrated a friend's birthday. Then on Sunday we relaxed and celebrated with a BBQ and these amazing desserts. I told him to pick any dessert and I would make it. He chose two ;) Stuffed peanut butter chocolate chip cookies and coconut cream cake.
These cookies are truly delicious. Sandwiched in between two peanut butter chocolate chip cookies, is a whole peanut butter cup. The original recipe can be found here. In addition to the chocolate chip cookies we added peanut butter and butterscotch chips. Next time I am going to make them a bit smaller and stuff them with the peanut butter cups from Trader Joe's. And yes, these were gone in a matter of minutes (as I knew they would be) so before the party I made sure to freeze a few so we could enjoy them later in the week!

Isn't this a pretty cake? I'm not really a fan of coconut. I don't mind the flavor, in fact I love coconut milk, but I just don't like the texture of coconut. My husband, however, loves coconut! This cake was a bit time consuming, and didn't come out perfect but was so tasty that even I liked it! Slightly sweet coconut cake, coconut cream filling, white chocolate frosting and topped with unsweetened coconut curls. The coconut pastry cream recipe can be found at Leite's Culinaria. The coconut cake and frosting recipes are taken from the Macrina cookbook. My sister-in-law lives in Seattle and she is able to eat all the wonderful treats from this bakery. She gave me the cookbook and I am able to bake them in my home. And everything I have tried is amazing! I highly recommend the book and if you are in Seattle, make a visit to the bakery!
Have a great week!

Hello! I am so excited to be attending BlogSugar this year. I had so much fun at the first one but missed the second one last year (new baby!) so I'm looking forward to September. I'm also excited because I will be making the delicious desserts for everyone to enjoy! I can't wait to meet everyone and share my yummy treats.

Sewing: Fabric Sash Tutorial

This fabric sash has been on my project "to do" list for awhile. And it was so simple I don't know why I waited so long! A few years ago I purchased a few Calvin Klein dresses from Marshalls, each were around $40. Fully lined, simple, great fit. But a little plain.

This yellow one is my favorite. And I have the cutest shoes to wear with it but it needed a little dash of color. I rummaged through my fabric stash and came across this material from Alexander Henry called "coriander". Navy, yellow, white and gray. A beautiful combination.

I found this tutorial on how to make a fabric sash and since I'm a visual person I thought I would photograph each step. This is a first for me so please excuse any mistakes! I hope its easy to understand and follow!

Since I didn't really measure to see how long I wanted the sash I figured too long was better than too short! I didn't trim it so the length is an odd size. You can, of course, make this as wide and long as you want!

Step 6:

Okay, before you go to the last step take a minute and make sure there are no gaps. You may be able to sew in a straight line and line up the material just perfect. But I can't. And you don't want to pull the whole sash right side out only to find a whole where you didn't sew! Trust me.

Step 7:

Love! I'll be wearing it to a friends wedding on Saturday!

And I have another idea for a sash to go with the yellow dress and these shoes!

Randomness on Wednesday

Lots of things to share and I love lists. So I combined them both and tried not to make the list too long!

* I went to the library to get my book club book (all out, had to put a copy on hold) and instead came home with these books. Instead of spending ALL night on Pinterest (you can follow me here), I'll be enjoying these books.

* I've been teaching M sign language but she seems to interpret my signs a little differently and makes up her own so that only Brian and I know what she is saying! Its cute, but a little confusing at times since a few look very similar. Her newest one is "help" and instead of using the sign I tried to teach her she raises her hand or in urgent situations, raises both hands. I like her version much better.

* This week I will be attempting my third try at making macarons. The first two, while tasting great, didn't have the "typical" macaron look. So after a lot of research, I'm hoping to have success this time around!
First failed attempt at macarons, 4 years ago

* Have you ever purchased bulk food products? A friend introduced me to Azure Standard awhile back and I'll be placing an order soon! A few friends are going in on some things with me and we can't wait to get everything!

* I went to get M up from her nap yesterday and found she had taken off her pants AND diaper AND went to the bathroom both on the crib and on the floor. Luckily there was no finger painting or anything brown...but it was a funny scene to walk in to!

* I love my kitchen. We remodeled our house about 8 years ago and I was able to get a great kitchen. To good to be true appliances, beautiful countertops and custom cabinets, my dad is a master carpenter! I also have tons of storage space but somehow I need even more. I've just collected so many things and its hard to let go...so a little organization was in order. I started with the most disorganized cabinets and even though I still have lots of things/food at least its organized!
Before
After, I love baskets!

* Oh, and Miette is now walking! It is the cutest thing and makes me want to cry each time I see her little Frankenstein walk! And she is so proud of herself.

Hope you have a great Wednesday. I'm off to make test some new (pink!) recipes for BlogSugar!
