All About Boys: Free Pattern Edition // A Visit to Rancho

Hello! It's day three of our series All About Boys: Free Pattern Edition and today I am sharing what I made for Henri. I am in love this boy and when I put this outfit on him I actually squealed at how cute he looked! And this picture will be printed and framed for our house. It is just too precious.
We each decided to do a theme for our outfits and photoshoots. I had to choose our absolute favorite place to visit and that is Rancho Los Alamitos
Its a historic ranch that has 4 acres of gardens developed in the 20's and 30's as well as a restored working ranch barnyard. Horses, sheeps, goats, chickens, a tractor, plenty of room to run, so many fun things to explore and I have to say its so relaxing and just magical.
Enough about the location, on to the outfit! First are his shorts. I used the Oliver & S Sunny Day Shorts pattern and made some modifications. I knew that I would be using suspenders so I decided to do a flat front waistband with the elastic in the back only. I also topstitched the side seams, waistband and inseam. How cute are the cuffs with the button tab? I was inspired by some shorts I saw and Zara and I'm so glad I tried it out with these shorts. They are just perfect!
For his shirt, I used Dana's Basic Tee. Since the free pattern is for a size 4, I had to use one of Henri's existing shirts to get the correct size. I'll be honest, I had a tough time getting the neckline perfect. I think I took it apart 3 times before I said that its good enough! The fabric is from a women's shirt I found on clearance at Old Navy. I was able to save a few steps by using the existing hems, I love saving time!
I was going to just stop at the shirt and shorts but I had some extra time and decided that I would do something that has been on my list for almost a year. Replicating my favorite pair of moccasin booties that he outgrew. It was quite a process, and I still have a lot of work to do for a perfect fit, but I absolutely LOVE how they turned out!

The outer is made with some scrap leather and is lined with a gray melton wool and the sole is suede. I didn't have any shoe laces that were short enough so I had to use some ribbon. It worked but its not the most ideal, anyone have any resources for toddler laces?
I definitely plan to make a few more versions (as soon as I can get my hands on some more leather) and can't wait to get the pattern perfect.

In addition to being fun, this project was very affordable! By using free patterns and items that were already in my stash (and were either free or thrifted/on clearance) I was able to create this outfit for almost nothing!

I do hope you are inspired by the outfits we have created using these free patterns. We sure had a lot of fun creating them. Tomorrow we will each be posting some upcoming boys sewing plans (or another outfit!). Feel free to sew along and use the tag #allaboutboystheseries.

Love the entire outfit so much!! I'm definitely going to have to copy that button tab on the shorts hem. What a great idea! And I can't say enough good things about those shoes! Great job!

What a fabulous outfit! Well done on the tee, the cuffs on shorts look fab, and I really prefer flat front, so obviously I thought it was col! The moccasins - oh my! Love them!

What a precious outfit. I love it. The colors and stripes work so well together. Sooooo cute on the shoes. I would totally hack into a leather jacket I've been saving if I had another pair of shoes to replicate. I've got those same suspenders for my boy. They were actually the only clothes item I bought for him before he was born!

You're right, the cuffs and tab on those shorts are nothing short of amazing!! It's such a fun detail on a basic pattern, and adds such a great touch.

You already know this, but the shoes are nothing short of amazing!! Congrats on them, it looks like you're getting REALLY close on getting them just right.

PS-I love when people say "If I'm being honest" in a blog post. We should start every post with that, right? :) I love it though, and it makes a lot of sense.

Great job!
