A Birthday Shirt // McCalls 6044

Well, it only took me about a year but I finally sewed a shirt for my husband. And it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be!
Each holiday that came around I would say (to myself) I'm going to sew him the shirt. I've had the pattern cut, fabric and I even made a muslin (to check the fit) about 8 months ago! He (lovingly) kept giving me a hard time about sewing something for him so when his birthday was rolling around, I decided now was the time.

I finished it up just in time for him to wear to the OC Fair. That way I could sneak pictures of him wearing it without having him awkwardly pose for me. We had a lot of fun with the kids. Rides, monster trucks, pictures in the photo booth and our fun ended with H throwing up on me. Quite an event and he is much better! But let's talk more about the shirt.
The Pattern: McCalls 6044, View A (the most basic version)
Size: XL. Sizing in the shoulders, neck and chest is great. I think I'll take in the side seams a bit next time.
Fabric: A very lightweight shirting fabric from Michael Levine Loft
Alterations: Instead of the curved hem I cut it straight across
I was surprised at how quick this came together and how easy the instructions were to follow. I was proud at myself for easing in the sleeves with minimal gathering. I did run into a bit of trouble when attaching the collar but I was able to fix it so there weren't too many small puckers. I stole the buttons from a shirt he no longer wears and my machine sewed perfect button holes!
I have a brown and white gingham fabric and I think I'll try a version that has a little more detailing for the next one. And pearl snaps. I think that will look great!
I also have these vintage patterns and I need to make him a few of these as well!

I'm hooked on sewing for him now, it was so fun!

All About Boys // Sewing through my pattern stash

Today is the final day of our summer/free pattern edition of All About Boys! Heidi is doing a round up of basic tees she has sewn for E. And Brooke is talking about her fall sewing plans for O! It's been so fun sewing along with these ladies and I hope we have inspired you to sew for your boys.

Do you have a large stash of patterns? And quite a few that you haven't even sewn? There are so many amazing designers out there and they are putting out some awesome patterns lately. I decided to look through and see what patterns I have and make a plan of what I will sew later this year for Henri. Here are the patterns that I have and that I want to sew. But I will need to narrow it down because this list has gotten quite long!

Small Fry Skinny Jeans by Titchy Threads
I've sewn these before and I absolutely love the fit and how professional they look, both inside and out! They are time consuming but I feel they are definitely worth it.

Johnny B Good Hoodie by Shwin Designs
I tested this pattern and I think H wore it only a few times. It was a little big but then by the time I remembered it again it was too small! So another one is definitely in order.

Number 9 Trousers by Shwin Designs
I bought the pattern, printed it, taped it together and then forgot about it! I like having a nicer pair of pants for him to wear to church and other fancy occasions.

The Greenpoint Cardigan by Hey June
I love this cardigan. I've made one for M and one for H. Its a great layering piece and its not to heavy since our winters around here don't get too cold!

Hawthorne Zip-Up Sweatshirt by Willow and Co. Patterns
This pattern was designed by Laura of Craftstorming and Titchy Threads. I adore her skinny jeans pattern and I know that the techniques and finishing of this sweatshirt will be amazing. I'm excited to sew this up!

And of course, he will need plenty of t-shirts. My go to is the Charlie Tee by Fishsticks Designs but I also have the Anytime At All Tee by Shwin Designs that I need to try out!

Whew. What a list. Stay tuned for our next All About Boys series which will be this Fall. Can't wait to share what we will be creating for the boys in our lives!

All About Boys: Free Pattern Edition // A Visit to Rancho

Hello! It's day three of our series All About Boys: Free Pattern Edition and today I am sharing what I made for Henri. I am in love this boy and when I put this outfit on him I actually squealed at how cute he looked! And this picture will be printed and framed for our house. It is just too precious.
We each decided to do a theme for our outfits and photoshoots. I had to choose our absolute favorite place to visit and that is Rancho Los Alamitos
Its a historic ranch that has 4 acres of gardens developed in the 20's and 30's as well as a restored working ranch barnyard. Horses, sheeps, goats, chickens, a tractor, plenty of room to run, so many fun things to explore and I have to say its so relaxing and just magical.
Enough about the location, on to the outfit! First are his shorts. I used the Oliver & S Sunny Day Shorts pattern and made some modifications. I knew that I would be using suspenders so I decided to do a flat front waistband with the elastic in the back only. I also topstitched the side seams, waistband and inseam. How cute are the cuffs with the button tab? I was inspired by some shorts I saw and Zara and I'm so glad I tried it out with these shorts. They are just perfect!
For his shirt, I used Dana's Basic Tee. Since the free pattern is for a size 4, I had to use one of Henri's existing shirts to get the correct size. I'll be honest, I had a tough time getting the neckline perfect. I think I took it apart 3 times before I said that its good enough! The fabric is from a women's shirt I found on clearance at Old Navy. I was able to save a few steps by using the existing hems, I love saving time!
I was going to just stop at the shirt and shorts but I had some extra time and decided that I would do something that has been on my list for almost a year. Replicating my favorite pair of moccasin booties that he outgrew. It was quite a process, and I still have a lot of work to do for a perfect fit, but I absolutely LOVE how they turned out!

The outer is made with some scrap leather and is lined with a gray melton wool and the sole is suede. I didn't have any shoe laces that were short enough so I had to use some ribbon. It worked but its not the most ideal, anyone have any resources for toddler laces?
I definitely plan to make a few more versions (as soon as I can get my hands on some more leather) and can't wait to get the pattern perfect.

In addition to being fun, this project was very affordable! By using free patterns and items that were already in my stash (and were either free or thrifted/on clearance) I was able to create this outfit for almost nothing!

I do hope you are inspired by the outfits we have created using these free patterns. We sure had a lot of fun creating them. Tomorrow we will each be posting some upcoming boys sewing plans (or another outfit!). Feel free to sew along and use the tag #allaboutboystheseries.

Coming Next Week: All About Boys Series

Hello friends! I've been away from the blog for awhile but I've been working on some fun projects.

About a month ago, some sewing friends and I were chatting, on Instagram, about how there were so many fun pattern tours and sewing projects for girls but not many for boys.
So we decided to start our own series All About Boys: Free Pattern EditionWe are each sewing an outfit (or two!) for summer using the same two free patterns (Oliver and S Sunny Days Shorts and Dana's Basic Tee) and we will be showing our own unique interpretations of the patterns. I've seen some sneak peeks and I have to say that these are going to be the cutest outfits around!
Here's a little sneak of my outfit for Henri!

Come back next week and see what Heidi (Handmade Frenzy), Brooke (Oliver's Fancy) and I have sewn for our adorable boys! Also, Erin ( wasn't able to participate this time around but we are looking forward to seeing her creations for our second edition!
